This is the thirty-sixth volume of the UTS Writers’ Anthology series from the prestigious Creative Writing program at the University of Technology Sydney.
2022: Left Turn on Red Permitted After Stopping
Left Turn on Red Permitted After Stopping is a testament to the quality of the UTS creative writing program and to the state of Australian literature. It offers its readers the timeless, vital gift of slantwise truth-telling.

Featuring fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry, Left Turn on Red Permitted After Stopping gathers thirty remarkable contributions from a season of collision, disruption and resilience. Left Turn on Red Permitted After Stopping reverberates with grief stemming from the immutable, sharing stories of lives shattered and rebuilt by those who emerge alive but inevitably altered.
This anthology’s prismatic range of voices represent an Australia emerging from the unprecedented. Left Turn on Red Permitted After Stopping surprises with its unconventionality while embracing timeless themes of grief and hope, belonging and other, mothers and daughters, and of tribulation and resurfacing in the aftermath. Featuring a range of pieces both sad and funny, all will touch your heart.
This year’s foreword is composed by esteemed writer of fiction, poetry and non-fiction, Emily Bitto, whose debut novel The Strays won the 2015 Stella Prize. Her second novel Wild Abandon was published in 2021.
It is the unique role, or perhaps propensity, of creative writers to both embrace and enact complexity, ambiguity, openness and multiplicity of meaning, rather than advance a single viewpoint or opinion. Without exception, all of the pieces in this anthology do this.
