On the back of the COP26 in Glasgow UK, the World Health Organisation’s Nursing and Midwifery Global Community of Practice hosted two Climate Change for Health Webinars. The webinars stimulated interest, debate and discussion around nursing and midwifery engagement and commitment to the global Climate Change for Health agenda.
The hosts brought partners and experts together to generate actions and opportunities to work together through participation in an ongoing programme of work within the Nursing and Midwifery Global Community of Practice on this topic.
Among the issues covered the webinars, a focus of strengthening health care system resilience was emphasised along with data of identified problem areas in vector-borne disease, water and food borne disease, direct injuries/deaths, heat-related diseases, and mental health issues. Furthermore, extreme heat was considered in its effects of maternal and newborn health.

The Chief Nursing Office at the World Health Organisation has recently established the Global Community of Practice. The function of this virtual network is in facilitating the collective contribution of knowledge from nurses and midwives from around the world as the means to building sustainability in health care systems. The following objectives expand upon this:
- To support an international community of nurses and midwives to build strategies towards achieving universal health coverage
- To develop compassionate leaders who are powerful and inspirational agents for change
- To create opportunities to develop sustainable high quality health care systems that are evidence based and data driven
The community of practice is governed by a steering committee made up of global experts in nursing and midwifery, of which our Director Michele Rumsey is an active member.
Nursing and Midwifery Global Community of Practice (NMGCOP) is now on soft launch and welcoming registration from nursing and midwifery leaders. NMGCOP is a virtual community where nurses and midwives around the world can meet, share evidence and practice, discuss, inform and support one another in order to contribute to building sustainable health systems.
