Learn about UTS research funded by non-traditional sources:
Name of CIs: Senior Lecturer Alen Alempijevic (FEIT) and Research Director Michelle Zeibots (ISF) Collaborators: FEIT and ISF Name of Funder: Rail Manufacturing CRC (RMCRC) and Downer Rail Funding category: Category 4 Amount of funding:$624,000
In 2011, Downer Rail approached UTS to collaborate and support them in becoming a more innovative company. By 2013, we were working together to solve a problem plaguing the commuter rail sector; how to reduce the time rail passengers need to embark/disembark on stations at crowded inner-city rail station platforms to ensure trains leave on time.
We now have a proof-of-concept for a new product called DwellTrack, which came from a project funded in equal parts by RMCRC and Downer, that uses robotic sensors to monitor passenger movements and densities on platforms in real-time.
Once fully developed, DwellTrack could solve major issues like platform overcrowding and be able to inform platform staff of the reasons for delays in departure.
