New Health+Law Research Partnership
Health+Law is a new research partnership to improve the lives of people living with Hepatitis B or HIV, by eliminating legal barriers to testing and treatment.
Pilot research indicated that people living with blood borne viruses saw law as the epicentre of harmful impacts radiating throughout their lives, affecting their careers, mental and physical health, family life, and engagement with community.
With $2.2 million funding from the Australian Government’s Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections Research Program, Health+Law will identify and compare the impacts of various legal issues on access to health, testing and treatment; develop a legal needs screening and referral tool; and establish a national referral network of legal service providers with specific expertise in blood borne viruses.
Health+Law is led by Dr David Carter of UTS Law and a consortium of peak bodies: the HIV/AIDS Legal Centre (HALC), the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM), the National Association of People with HIV Australia (NAPHWA), and Hepatitis Australia. The partnership will also draw on the expertise of HIV- and hepatitis-related community organisations across Australia, and people with lived experience of blood borne viruses.
