Accelerating Innovative Local Transport: Community Transport of the Future
New research from IPPG takes a strategic look at community transport across Australia - analysing its critical role and the challenges faced by both clients and providers, as well as investigating options for systemic and service-level innovation in the sector.
The research was carried out in collaboration with our industry partners:
- ITS Australia - the peak industry body for advanced transport technology;
- iMOVE - the national centre for transport and mobility R&D; and
- Four state transport agencies: Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland, Transport for NSW, Department of Transport Victoria and Department of Transport Western Australia
IPPG designed an exploratory research approach involving extensive desktop literature and evidence reviews and interviews and workshops with key government, industry and community transport stakeholders. These were combined with demographic modelling and additional qualitative analysis around technology, funding and systemic barriers.
The report reveals that many in the community, especially those with specific or more complex needs, still struggle to get where they need to go – with the difficulties experienced around transport disadvantage set to grow significantly within the next ten years.
Our findings identified the most pressing strategic issues facing community transport. The report highlights potential opportunities for more systemic, policy, technological and service model innovations that both the community transport sector and policymakers should consider.
