Building codes and regulations are continually changing throughout the world, adapting to the ever-changing building designs and construction methods. Environmental impacts including increased risks of flooding, bushfires, cyclones and extreme temperatures provide constant challenges to ensure buildings are constructed ensuring occupants remain safe and healthy, whilst minimising impacts on the environment. New Australian building codes and regulations are leading the field in designing and adapting to these changes, ensuring buildings constructed today will perform and function well for many decades to come.
The challenges of new building codes, standards, construction methods and planning legislation requires all practitioners working in the building regulation industry to not only be aware of these changes, but they must also have the skills necessary to adapt their work practices and procedures to implement these changes. New nation wide building codes and standards will soon come into effect. Now is the time to prepare for these changes.
Professions including building surveyors, certifiers, architects, builders and planners all work within the building regulation system. Their knowledge and skills utilised in the effective design, assessment and certification of buildings ensure some of the highest standards of building compliance in the world. There are unique opportunities for building compliance including the use and assessment of performance solutions. Exploring the most up-to-date theory and practice for interpreting requirements around complex buildings, and learning how to implement the National Construction Code (NCC) increases the health, safety and sustainability of building projects around Australia.
The steps to ensure quality building regulation outcomes in practice include:
- Understanding the role of the NCC as it relates to small and large scale buildings.
- Having a working knowledge of the theory and practice of NCC compliance.
- Being equipped to think outside the square by assessing and analysing performance solutions.
- Being equipped to assess the fire resistance, access and egress, and services and equipment requirements for all buildings.
- Having a broad knowledge of the health, amenity and energy efficiency requirements in the NCC.
- Developing the ability to research, interpret and apply the NCC for the regulation of large and complex buildings.
- Understanding and preparing for the upcoming changes in building regulations, particularly the new NCC to come into effect in 2023.
