Paper by UTS Honours student accepted at FOCS 2024
UTS's QSI has recently had two papers accepted to the 65th IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS 2024), one of which is co-authored by UTS Honours student Euan Mendoza.
The IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS), together with ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC), are generally regarded as the top conference in theoretical computer science. The two papers from UTS's QSI accepted to FOCS 2024 are on the topic of testing isomorphism of algebraic structures, which has applications to diverse areas such as quantum information, post-quantum cryptography, and computer algebra.
The papers are:
- 'Canonical forms for matrix tuples in polynomial time.' Youming Qiao (UTS:QSI) and Xiaorui Sun (University of Illinois at Chicago).
- 'Faster isomorphism testing of p-groups of Frattini class-2.' Gábor Ivanyos (Hungarian Academy of Sciences); Euan Jacob Mendoza (UTS); Youming Qiao (UTS:QSI); Xiaorui Sun (University of Illinois at Chicago); Chuanqi Zhang (UTS:QSI).
In particular, one paper is co-authored by a UTS Honours student Evan Mendoza and a QSI PhD student Chuanqi Zhang. Euan is supported by an undergraduate scholarship from CSIRO and the Sydney Quantum Academy (SQA), and the second paper grew from his Honours project. Chuanqi is supported by a top-up scholarship from the Sydney Quantum Academy.
Here is Euan's reaction to having a paper accepted at FOCS and his plan with the support from his CSIRO/SQA scholarship:
“Hearing that I got into FOCS was very surprising and very exciting. Since I have spent the majority of my Honours time reading about problems within theoretical computer science, the significance of FOCS and STOC becomes very apparent, since every paper you cite from those conferences are generally ones that break new ground into new algorithmic territory. As an undergrad student, I felt very lucky to be part of a team who can claim to have put out a paper in this conference.
“During this time I was supported by the CSIRO/SQA Next Gen Graduates Scholarship. The scholarship provides a training allowance that can be used to attend conferences and professional development events. The scholarship also includes a placement at Sydney University Nanohub and professional development coursework. I plan on using the training allowance to attend FOCS in Chicago and hopefully present the paper.”
