Back Into The Industry Fray, the ACCC Sues, and Defending Public Interest Journalism
Chrisanthi Giotis, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Centre for Media Transition
This newsletter begins with the big news from within the Centre for Media Transition and the upcoming departure of CMT co-director Professor Peter Fray.
The CMT was launched in July 2017 by US journalism provocateur Jeff Jarvis from City University New York. Before a packed crowd, Jarvis called on the CMT in particular, and journalism in general, to prove its worth to its audiences. It was — and is — a pertinent provocation and for the CMT, one that guides everything we do. That’s why we serve both the news media industry, with work such as our recent report on innovation, and other less public ‘audiences’ inside government and academia.
We also know that proving value is an ongoing and evolving matter — and that, like most things these days, the CMT is in transition, as its name says. Our most immediate transition is now upon us. Peter Fray this week announced that he is returning to the news media industry as the editor-in-chief of Private Media, the publisher of Crikey, INQ, The Mandarin and Smart Company.
Peter's departure is a big loss. We will miss him. But it is all part of the CMT’s evolution. He will start his new job in early 2020. Stay tuned for developments at the Centre — and Peter’s farewell newsletter, next fortnight.
