Professor Liz Harry appointed Director of ithree institute

Professor Liz Harry – a world leader in the field of bacterial cell division – has been appointed as Director of ithree institute (infection, immunity and innovation) at UTS Science.

For three decades, Professor Harry’s innovative research has led to several unique and significant discoveries. Her research has often changed the direction of thinking, and has afforded excellent opportunities in antibacterial discovery in industry.

Professor Harry has been at UTS since 2005 and has held the positions of Deputy Director of the ithree institute and Acting Director since 2015, following the departure of Professor Ian Charles.

She has a focus on collaboration and engagement with industry, ensuring the Institute’s research has relevance and impact, as well as excellence. This, coupled with her introduction of a student learning program designed to integrate and develop research and teaching to produce future graduates with the skills needed to control infection and find innovative solutions to antibiotic resistance, will ensure continued success for the ithree institute in the future.

Professor Harry is a previous winner of the Australian Eureka Prize for Scientific Research; and the ASM Frank Fenner Award, awarded by the Australian Society for Microbiology in recognition of her distinguished contributions. This year, she was included in the SBS list of 6 Six Impressive Aussie Women Scientists (opens an external site).

As a highly experienced and productive researcher, Professor Harry has shown she has the capability and expertise to lead a team of highly talented researchers, to set the ithree institute on the path to being recognised worldwide for research excellence in reducing the impact of infectious diseases on animal and human health and the environment; and reducing resistance to antibiotics.
