Sharpening rugby league players in training
Joanne Hausler, PhD student
Translating drills on the training field to tries on match day is the key to success for all Rugby League sides. With an increasing need for evidence-based strategies to prepare Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) players for the demands of competition. My research is looking to optimise how teams train to best prepare them for a match.
Focussing on tactical performance, I am investigating how to implement a scientific approach to cultivate research that assists holistic monitoring and improves training practises within NRL teams. I am using wearable microtechnology to study movement patterns, strategy and tactics of rugby players as well as other qualitative methods such as interviewing coaches to understand and improve current practices in training and game-play.
The ability to embed my research within the NRL is a unique and valuable experience as I can gain insights into real problems within the sport at the most elite level. The research centre at Moore Park allows high performance industries such as the NRL access to professional expertise and leading researchers within one world-class sports science facility.
