Prestigious Google PhD Fellowship awarded to GBDTC student

GBDTC PhD student Shuo Yang has been awarded a prestigious Google PhD Fellowship for 2022. Shuo has been recognised for his research in the field of Machine Perception, Speech Technology and Computer Vision. Choosing only the best and brightest students, Google PhD Fellowship award recipients are recognised as some of the most gifted young academics in the world.
This is the second time a GBDTC PhD student has been the recipient of this illustrious award. Congratulations to Shuo and his UTS supervisor, Associate Professor Min Xu!
The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to acknowledge outstanding graduate students doing innovative and exceptional research in computer science and other promising research areas. Fellowships support talented PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to guide the future of technology. The 1-year Fellowship provides the student with $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities and travel expenses including overseas travel. In addition, the student is paired with a Google Research Mentor.
Shuo Yang is currently a third-year PhD student at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), supervised by Associate Professor Min Xu. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Harbin Institute of Technology, China in 2020. Shuo Yang's research interests focus on data-centric machine learning. During his PhD, he conducted in-depth research on data efficiency, data reliability, and data interpretability in machine learning systems. He has published more than ten papers in top conferences and journals, such as TPAMI, ICML, ICLR, and CVPR. One of his papers on few-shot learning was selected as an oral presentation at the ICLR 2021 conference (top 1.7%).
