The program pairs UTS students from a refugee or asylum seeker background with a volunteer mentor.

Applications are now open for the 2025 UTS Humanitarian Scholarship Academic Mentoring Program. See below for more information.

Mentors could be academic or professional staff, alumni or final year students. The purpose of the program is to support the access, participation and success of students throughout their undergraduate study at UTS.

Become an academic mentor

Who can apply: Academic staff at UTS

​Applications are now open for the 2025 UTS Humanitarian Scholarship Academic Mentoring Program.

The program pairs students from a refugee or asylum seeker background with a volunteer academic from their faculty, to help them with their transition into university and academic confidence.

It also provides staff with an opportunity to increase their cultural awareness and competency, be exposed to diverse ways of thinking and doing, and most importantly, give back make a real difference in the lives of students from a refugee and asylum seeker background.

What do I need to do as an academic mentor?

  • Meet with your mentee at least once a month between April and November 2025.
  • Build and nurture a supportive relationship with your mentee, answering any questions or concerns they may have.
  • Attend compulsory half day training on Thursday 24 April.

How do I apply?

Please fill out the 2025 Humanitarian Scholarship Academic Mentoring Program expression of interest by Friday 18 April at 5pm.

Become a peer mentor

Who can apply: Experienced current students at UTS

Current students support commencing students with their transition to university in the first four weeks of semester. They ensure new students feel welcomed and included.

Become an industry mentor

Who can apply: Industry professionals

Industry professionals are connected with students to increase their career readiness. This is done through an annual flash-mentoring event where students learn about potential career paths, knowledge of work and industry expectations and culture. It also gives them an opportunity to develop professional networks in their chosen industry.

If you're interested in mentoring as an industry professional, please fill out our Industry Mentor expression of interest form.
