Shopfront supporting Eco-Schools
Last session, UTS Management Consulting students worked with Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) to develop a sponsorship model for their Eco-Schools Program.
Eco-Schools is an environmental education program promoting learning for a litter free and sustainable Australia. Young people get to engage in their environment in a meaningful and active way, and have a say in how their community can contribute to a more eco-friendly Australia.
Unfortunately, the work involved and the financial commitment of delivering the program in-class has seen many teachers reluctant to implement it at their schools.
This challenge was put to the UTS students, who came up with the idea to develop a sponsorship model: Eco-Schools partner with external organisations or businesses in a mutually beneficial relationship.
Eco-Schools would receive financial backing for the program, while sponsor receives a reputational boost, and an opportunity to invest in their local community.
Students also designed and delivered a marketing strategy and materials for approaching potential sponsors, along with criteria for selecting potential corporate sponsors which helps KAB weigh up the benefits and risks associated with partnering with a particular organisation.
Students analysed and categorised large corporations into three categories – polluters, greens and in-betweens – to help KAB when deciding who to approach and partner with on Eco-Schools.
The students hope that by implementing this model, KAB can roll out Eco-Schools more widely across Australia.
Marina Antoniozzi, National Programs Manager at KAB, said she was grateful for the students’ work, and found it to be a great opportunity for both herself and the organisation.
‘I had a really positive experience. The students were engaged and asked lots of questions. They were very passionate about our problems and that’s great to see.
‘I just really enjoy working with young people and learning from them and seeking different perspectives.’
