Brown University and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have joined forces to enhance and grow the impact of the e-journal Gateways: International Journal of Community Research and Engagement.
Over the past decade, Gateways has established itself as a leading journal in its field, pioneering community-engaged research and challenging the assumption that only research completed inside universities, and defined by discipline-determined priorities, is rigorous and valid.
With the notion of the university as a civically engaged institution gaining traction, and calls for scholarship to be more inclusive, Gateways’ approach is increasingly relevant in transcending traditional boundaries.
New approaches to knowledge generation featured in the refereed journal have helped give substance and clarity to this call for a more inclusive, though no less rigorous, conception of scholarship.
The partnership will aim to increase Gateways’ international growth and position the e-journal as a global leader in the field of engaged scholarship and practice.

Margaret Malone, Gateways’ Managing Editor, adds: “This work pushes us outside familiar worlds and forces us to take into consideration different perspectives, different sets of knowledge and different experiences. Our new partnership will ensure Gateways continues to be an inclusive and innovative evidence-based global forum for these essential conversations.”
Gateways is published by UTS ePress and jointly edited and managed by UTS Shopfront Community Program at the Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion at UTS, and the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University, Rhode Island, in the United States.
The first volume to be published under the partnership, Gateways Volume 11:2 in December, includes the first articles from the journal’s new Author+Editor program, through which historically and geographically under-represented academics are mentored to scholarly publication.
Next year will see the launch of two special volumes examining best-practice community-university engagement, characterised by clear objectives, cutting-edge innovation and rigour.
