We are all responsible for creating a safe and respectful UTS. Addressing sexual harm, both in its prevention and response, demands collective action, with us all playing an important role.

Content warning: Conversations about sexual harm can be confronting and distressing for all involved. UTS has a number of free and confidential services that can help and support you, every step of the way.

Students at RNA ODay activation

As places of higher education and research, universities are in a unique position to act. And it’s a responsibility we do not take lightly. Completely eradicating sexual harm at UTS requires shifting attitudes and changing behaviours, a process that takes time, energy, consistency and focus. While we have many wins to be proud of, we also acknowledge that a lot more needs to be done.

Milestones to date

New policy:
The development and implementation of the Sexual Harm Prevention and Response Policy is an essential step in formalising UTS's commitment to addressing sexual harm. It serves as a guide for the university and aligns it with best practices in the sector.

Theory of Change:
This roadmap is underpinned by data and evidence-informed policies and programs, with input from proactive members of the campus community. It focuses on collectively addressing sexual harm to strengthen community safety.

Consent Matters:
As of September 2023, more than 110,000 UTS students and staff have successfully passed our mandatory online module, Consent Matters. A new update will be released in 2024, drawing on the latest developments in culture, law, and global best practices.

Engaging in conversation:
Initiatives like our award-winning 'Wanna Spoon, Ask First!' activations allow us to connect with over 5000 members of the community each year, engaging in a two-way dialogue around sexual consent, bystander intervention and support.

Read more about our institutional results, including what we’ve achieved to date.

We're taking part in the Polished Man campaign

This October, we’re also taking part in the Polished Man campaign, helping to raise awareness and funds to end violence against women and children.

Join our UTS champions in ‘giving violence the finger’ as we step up, speak out, and take a stand.

Acknowledgement of Country

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation and the Boorooberongal People of the Dharug Nation upon whose ancestral lands our campuses now stand. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
