Dr Michele Bruniges AM | Disrupting Disadvantage in Australian Schools
Empowering Impact: Enabling Flourishing Diverse School Communities
Australian schools are increasingly divided along socio-economic lines, creating school communities that are overwhelmingly challenged to support students to succeed.
Certain communities or schools – where barriers and disparities often manifest in what are termed "concentrations of disadvantage" – bear a disproportionate burden of socio-economic challenges, leading to entrenched educational inequalities.
Hosted by the Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion, Dr Michele Bruniges AM Paul Ramsay Foundation fellowship will uncover how concentrations of disadvantage show up in Australian schools; how they are measured and defined; the drivers behind them; and the impact they have on education policy and practice.
“Every child and young person deserve the opportunity to thrive and to get on the best pathway for future learning and employment. Michele’s fellowship will add to the knowledge base, providing insights and evidence to foster greater equity among Australian school students” said PRF Head of School-age Learning John Bush.
The fellowship is an opportunity for Michele’s acknowledged leadership and expertise to encourage discussion and debate on equity and policy at all levels of the education sector, from students to government leaders community and government.
By examining national and state level policy levers and the data on concentrations Dr Bruniges' fellowship will deliver evidence to guide policy to foster socio-economic diversity in schools, improving the Australian school system for students, teachers and their communities.
Through evidence-based research and collaboration with key stakeholders, Dr Bruniges' findings have the potential to inform the development of targeted interventions and policy initiatives aimed at mitigating concentrations of disadvantage.
By understanding the impact of concentrations of disadvantage and advocating for evidence-based solutions, Dr Bruniges plans to make a meaningful contribution towards creating a more inclusive and equitable education system in Australia.
