About the speakers:
Sally Hetherington, OAM:
Sally lived in Cambodia from 2011 - 2017. Seeing the unintended consequences of voluntourism, she teamed up with the Human and Hope Association, a nightly English school at the time, to develop it into a reputable community centre. Working as Operations Manager, Sally was responsible for implementing new programs addressing social issues, fundraising, logistics, mentoring and training the staff and ensuring the organisation's long-term future. Sally overcame countless obstacles, but the biggest lesson she learned was that for sustainable change to happen, locals needed to be leading organisations.
Sally was awarded an Order of the Medal of Australia at age 33 for her service to international communities.
What is Human and Hope Association?
Human and Hope Association (HHA) is a community centre based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This innovative NGO is unique in that they are run entirely by local staff with no foreign volunteers. Instead of giving out direct aid, they invest in education, vocational training and community support projects that have a long-term impact on alleviating poverty. https://www.humanandhopeassociation.org/about-us/
These include:
- Education Programs
- Vocational Training Programs
- Community Support Programs

He also co-founded the ASEAN-Australian Strategic Youth Partnership, a growing youth-led movement advocating for stronger ties between Australia and its Southeast Asian neighbours through regional projects that encourage cross-cultural collaboration. Both organisations have been recognised by the Australian government and ASEAN institutions for their contributions to strengthening Australia’s relations with the region.
In 2019, Thomas was selected by the Australian-ASEAN Council to partake in the Australian-ASEAN Emerging Leaders Program, which brought together entrepreneurs from Australia and the ASEAN region to build connections and enhance youth leadership.
