The World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Development at the University of Technology Sydney (WHOCC UTS) is proud to be a funding recipient of the Australian Governments’ five-year Partnerships for a Healthy Region (PHR) initiative. The goals and priorities of WHOCC UTS are well-aligned with the PHR program and the World Health Organization, enhancing regional collaboration to promote Health for All.
The AU$5 million grant empowers WHOCC Nursing and Midwifery UTS to continue its role as a leader in strengthening health systems and achieving Universal Health Coverage across the Pacific region. It recognizes the efforts and impacts of the Centre in uplifting regional health security, equity, and resilience.
This funding has been well overdue, as nurses and midwives make up 75% of the Pacific health workforce and are at the forefront of tackling major regional health issues including non-communicable diseases, sexual and reproductive health, and preventable communicable diseases. From childhood immunisation to elderly care support, our nurses and midwives are vital to the health and wellbeing of all people.

As our health systems keep getting challenged, with the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, continued investments in our primary health workforce, especially nurses and midwives, become especially crucial. We are thankful that DFAT recognizes the immense role nurses and midwives play in effective disease control and health system resilience for the region.
As the Secretariat for the Global Network of WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing and Midwifery (2022-2026), WHOCC Nursing and Midwifery UTS continues to build effective partnerships and drive engagement with both international and local communities. The next five years will only see increased collaboration with existing and new alliances throughout the Pacific, to achieve better health outcomes for all.
