Alternative pathways to uni

22 September 2020

Getting into your preferred university is every student’s dream. But sometimes, things don’t quite go to plan. Luckily, there are lots of pathways you can choose, including UTS College.

We sat down with Pramesh (currently studying the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology), who went to UTS College and navigated his way into his dream course. Here’s what he had to say about his experience...

The pathway I used to get into uni was UTS College, which is a private institution closely affiliated with UTS. It helped me fast track into the second year of my UTS degree.

I still remember the day when I felt my world was falling apart after I saw my ATAR. My confidence dropped and I lost motivation to apply to any universities. But when I attended an info session at UTS College, I saw that there was another opportunity for me to get into my dream course.

I chose UTS College because when I was applying, they didn’t look at my ATAR and I didn’t have to apply through UAC. They looked at the marks I received in my subjects and based my admission on that. This was a dream come true for someone who thought his future was over after seeing his ATAR.

When it came to the course itself, I absolutely loved it. The best part is that the UTS College campus is just next to UTS, so I could still access all the facilities without feeling isolated. It felt like I was at UTS but just had classes in another building. I still studied with my friends in the library and caught the train with them.

Also, the study experience was great with constant support from great teachers, small class sizes and a multicultural environment. This helped me slowly transition into the bigger world at UTS. It felt like the perfect bridge between high school and university, and really prepared me for entering UTS. It also made me feel more confident when entering.

My favourite part was that I developed a close network of friends at UTS College. Given the class sizes are a little bit smaller, you become quite close. This is really nice for when you go into UTS, as you have a support network and a friendship group that is already established.

If I had any tips for Year 12 students, it would be to consider your options and don’t let a bad selection rank get you down. There are always ways into uni. And UTS College is definitely one of them!
