A paper co-written by UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures researchers, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Sydney and UNSW, has received a high commendation in the Public Health Research and Practice Excellence Awards, announced yesterday.
The awards celebrate outstanding papers with real-world impact that have been published in Public Health Research & Practice – an open-access, peer-reviewed, quarterly online journal published by the Sax Institute.
The commended paper, Built environment interventions for human and planetary health: integrating health in climate change adaptation and mitigation argues that landscapers, architects, urban planners and designers play a critical role in addressing the health impacts of climate change.
Professor Jason Prior of the University of Technology Sydney says the paper is a great example of how built environment professionals and health professionals can work together to address the challenges of climate change. “Built environment interventions must move beyond simple ecological sustainability to encouraging ways of life that are healthy for both humans and the planet," he says.
The paper was undertaken as part of the Healthy Higher Density Living research project which explores how future high density developments can be planned with a focus on healthy living. The project is being conducted by the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales, in partnership with Landcom. Research findings are helping policymakers and industry identify and implement proven health and wellbeing principles into their planning for urban developments.
