The City of Sydney is developing a world-leading new program to understand and address air quality concerns in the inner city.

Smart low-cost sensors will produce unprecedented new data about localised air quality and urban heat that can be used to support progressive agendas and improve design and planning outcomes relating to the redevelopment of public space, green infrastructure, and reduced vehicle traffic in the inner city.

Our researchers are developing a reliable baseline of data with which to measure the negative and positive impacts of major infrastructure projects, new cycleways, urban greening, electric vehicles, and light rail. We are also exploring global best practice and help the City of Sydney to synthesise their existing strategies, assets and commitments with emerging state, national and international policies, and standards.

Our initial work includes a Breathable Sydney Roadmap for air quality monitoring and data-driven social and environmental impact, due for publication in the second half of 2021.
