Side of apartment building

The NSW Government has committed to boost renewable energy and reduce power bills for people who live in apartments, but it is recognised that apartment residents face unique challenges in retrofitting their buildings with sustainability infrastructure.

At the time of this project in late 2020, only 0.5 per cent of strata schemes in NSW had connected solar PV systems, and the government wished to know what role they could play in reducing or removing regulatory and non-regulatory barriers to the uptake of sustainability infrastructure.

In response, ISF collaborated with Green Strata on a study for the NSW Department of Industry, Planning and Environment. The study identified pain points, regulatory and non-regulatory barriers, process improvements, and potential solutions in enabling uptake of sustainability infrastructure in apartment buildings. It also helped identify where barriers are shared between infrastructure types and how NSW legislation and other government actions can be streamlined to facilitate uptake.

The research was recognised for its rigorous, insightful, and ground-breaking findings and was presented to over 50 policy-makers in the department.
