Professor Nicholas Davis at BiiG 2023
Professor Nicholas Davis recently attended the 2023 BiiG conference as a panelist to discuss what happens when innovation happens without impact.
The verdict? Innovation is pointless unless real change follows.
The theme for this year's annual conference was "Innovation for impact". Over 650 people attended the event at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, with additional participants joining remotely from regional Queensland.
The conference focused on the challenges of implementing innovation in the face of bureaucratic obstacles such as tight budgets, onerous legislation, risk aversion, and workplace inertia. Keynote speakers and panelists discussed topics such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the metaverse, which may seem distant and surreal to those who struggle to access basic IT programs on their work computers.
Despite these challenges, many attendees were inspired by the optimistic voices advocating for a revolution in how government leverages technology to bring about real and lasting change.
This, said Human Technology Institute co-director Nicholas Davis, makes the current period of change the most exciting in history.
We’re putting in tech regulation that will impact us for the next 30 years
