Upon arriving in Australia as an exchange student, Julianne Ouellet Paradis was keen to engage with the local community and make the most of her time overseas. Volunteering with Responsible Cafes, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable practices within Bondi's hospitality sector, proved to be an ideal opportunity for Julianne.
As a Sustainable Futures Business major at UTS, she was able to apply her project management and sustainable business strategy skills to assist local businesses in improving their sustainability ratings. Additionally, Julianne collaborated with the local council to launch a successful reusable cup campaign. In six months, she enlisted 20 businesses to participate in Responsible Cafes' initiative.
When asked about her volunteer experience, Julianne emphasized the value of cultural immersion, creating meaningful relationships, and cultivating a sense of belonging. She encourages other students to pursue similar opportunities.
Do some volunteering! It is best to immerse yourself in a culture, feel a sense of home and create long-lasting friendships. But be aware, you might want to stay there, just like I decided to stay in Australia!
