About the Speaker
Susannah is the CEO of the Australian Science Media Centre, an independent not-for-profit organisation that works with the news media to increase the use of more evidence-based science in public discourse.
Susannah started her career as a research scientist working on the strange soil microorganisms known as slime moulds. She completed her postgraduate studies in Journalism at UTS and has worked at the interface between science and the media at the UTS Centre for Science Communication and at a global environment change organisation (the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program) based in Sweden.
In 2010 to 2011, Susannah chaired the Expert Working Group on Science and the Media for the Federal government, and in February 2011, she was appointed to the role of Commissioner at the national Climate Commission serving in the role until April 2012.
Susannah is on the Board of the Environment Institute at Adelaide University and the South Australia Steering Group for the South Australian Government She is also a judge for several science research/communication awards.
Susannah has a PhD in Cell Biology from Stanford University School of Medicine and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Science Communication from Adelaide University in 2016. She is a frequent presenter on the topic of science and the media and a regular contributor to ABC Radio National’s Drive program with Patricia Karvelas.
