This project aims to bridge the gap between the numerical and experimental approaches of obtaining STL. It builds upon the know-how of measuring the STL in world-class facilities in UTS Tech Lab (the Acoustics Lab is the most comprehensive engineering acoustics facility in Australia), and numerical expertise developed by the implementation of various design and simulation software which are readily available within UTS to general a virtual TL test suite validated by building an instrumented test wall segment.

The traditional way of calculating the STL by analytical and numerical approaches is standardised for simple configurations using either assumption of finite or infinite baffles. For complex multilayer configurations, or more exotic designs involving metasurfaces or metamaterials, an analytical solution usually does not exist.

Learning opportunities

  • Development of manufacturing processes and experimental framework for implementation of STL tests.
  • Development and validation of CAD design and simulation model of the UTS TL suite facilities including a virtual prototyping model (model updating, optimisation).
  • Developing critical skills by having hands-on experience with the testing and simulation of practical case studies, which can be translated into cross-disciplinary applications.
  • Collaboration within Tech Lab and research groups across the university.

Applicable knowledge

This project is suitable for 3rd and 4th year students.

How many places are available?

There are five (5) student positions available.

Why is this important?

This project is aimed at gaining the capability of designing and implementing case studies within validated testing scheme – which is a world first. The project will have industrial advantage and economic benefits from virtual/hands-on commissioning tests, as well as publication of top-quality journal papers and/or patents; pushing eventually the standard especially when it comes to flanking transmissions.
