An international research team including UTS's Associate Professor David Suggett has found that symbiotic microalgae form calcified structures outside their coral hosts that could act as "safe-houses" for the free living form of the microalgae. This chance discovery puts a whole new perspective on the microscopic plants, symbiotic microalgae, that are the "engines" of coral reefs.
