"Safe house" discovery a new insight on reef ecology
An international research team including UTS's Associate Professor David Suggett has found that symbiotic microalgae form calcified structures outside their coral hosts that could act as "safe-houses" for the free living form of the microalgae. This chance discovery puts a whole new perspective on the microscopic plants, symbiotic microalgae, that are the "engines" of coral reefs.
