Cook better. Live Smarter.
The Client
Marley Spoon, a meal kit subscription service, delivers quality ingredients to the customer's door. Customers can select from 16 recipes per week and have the option to skip any week and cancel anytime with their fully flexible subscription. Marley Spoon provides customers with high quality, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. As part of company ethos, Marley Spoon is also committed to environmental sustainability.
The Challenge
The UTS MBAe student team was tasked with developing ways Marley Spoon could improve its packaging and sustainability efforts to ensure best practice and to become the industry leader. The aim was to explore and assess innovative and sustainable food package solutions and alternative ways of service delivery that are scalable and help grow customer loyalty, all with minimal impact on the environment. Marley Spoon is looking to explore more sustainable supply chain and packaging options for their fast-growing operations in Australia.
The Solution
The student team developed a three-stage strategic plan that would allow Marley Spoon to meet its sustainability objectives:
- Reduce: Focus on reducing packaging wherever it is not critical to the transportation or protection of the product. Recommendations included:
- Aggregate proteins from each meal into one protein bag
- Reduce paper collateral and the redesign of packaging to facilitate reuse
- Replace: Investment in eco-friendly substitutes that make up a great percentage of the Marley Spoon box. Switch to bio-degradable materials for packaging
- Redesign: Transform Marley Spoon to a circular economy business; all elements of Marley Spoon's business being geared towards sustainable practices
The students put in an extreme effort to come up with a range of actionable items which will help us to improve our packaging and sustainability efforts.
