Which institutions matter for economic growth? An experiment.
abstract
We conduct a laboratory experiment to study the effect of inclusive vs, extractive political and economic institutions on economic growth. In different experimental sessions, we vary whether political competition or dictatorship is present, and whether the state has the ability to steal tax revenue. The structure of the economy includes the existence of two steady states, one of which Pareto-dominates the other. When inclusive political and economic institutions are present, output, welfare, and capital stock are higher and income inequality is lower than under extractive institutions
