Host organisations must commit to these requirements to host TD School students (BCII and MDSI) for an internship for course credit.

Basic Requirements

1. UTS internship paperwork

  • Register on CareerHub (UTS’s online career and internship platform)
  • Complete a UTS Workplace Health and Safety Checklist (via CareerHub as part of registration process). Renewal of this paperwork is required annually.
  • Review and accept the student’s placement summary details (this will be emailed to you from TDSchoolInternships@uts.edu.au)
  • If the internship is unpaid, complete the UTS Student Vocational Placement Agreement (via CareerHub)
  • [Data Science Internships only] For organisations hosting Master of Data Science and Innovation students, within the first 4 weeks of the placement, the intern will need to create an Internship Plan that sets out a timeline for activities, agreed deliverables and learning objectives to help prepare for a mutually beneficial internship experience. The internship supervisor at the host organisation needs to sign off on this plan, before the intern submits it to TD School as an assessment task.
  • Complete a UTS Student Evaluation form at the end of the internship, providing feedback to TD School and the student. You will be emailed a link to an electronic form from TDSchoolInternships@uts.edu.au.

2. Provide a professional and safe work environment

This includes a workplace safety induction as part of the student’s onboarding and any necessary workplace training

On the first day of the student's internship they are required to complete an electronic On-Site Workplace Health and Safety Checklist. We ask that host organisations support students to complete this paperwork.

3. Nominate an internship supervisor

The internship supervisor provides support to the student during their internship by:

  • setting internship tasks and responsibilities
  • overseeing the student's onboarding to the internship workplace, including organising an induction at the start of the internship.
  • supporting the student in meeting their learning goals
  • regularly providing guidance and feedback to the student on their professional performance and development
  • completing the UTS Student Evaluation form at the end of the internship, providing feedback to TD School and the student

4. Confirm hardware/software for placement

Prior to the internship starting any requirements around equipment to undertake the internship should be clearly agreed with the student intern

  • If the internship is taking place on-site there is an expectation that intern will be using your hardware/software unless otherwise stated and arranged with the student
  • If an internship is being undertaken in hybrid or work from home (WFH) format you need to provide clear and upfront information about any hardware and software requirements to undertaken the placement, if you are not providing equipment to the intern

5. Confirm internship details with the student

Students should be provided clear information before they start their internship on these details;

  • Their primary contact, or contacts, during the placement
  • Dates and hours of the internship (these should be confirmed with the student to make sure they fall within subject timeframe and any study commitments)
  • Key responsibilities or tasks for their role
  • Internship format and any requirements around recording their hours or check-in if working remotely
  • Payment arrangements (if applicable)
  • Any additional requirements for onboarding, e.g. WWCC or police checks

6. Data availability and access [for Data Science Internships]

Please ensure the data Master of Data Science and Innovation interns need to undertake their placement is available for the start of the internship, and any access requirements have been outlined and discussed with the intern, so they can undertake any preparatory steps before onboarding.
