Accreditation programs for laboratories and workshops
Accreditation programs for students working in laboratories and workshops are one way to ensure that students are provided with adequate information, training and supervision. They also equip the students with the knowledge to safely use the equipment, tools and substances relevant to each workshop or laboratory.
Overview
The accreditation program may be adopted by any workshop or laboratory used by students.
The basic elements of an accreditation program include:
- A review of hazards and the level of risk presented.
- Development of clear documented rules and procedures for specific plant, equipment and substances. These can be included in laboratory notes for students and/or posted next to plant or equipment.
- Information sessions for all students plus/minus supervised practice and signs on doors etc to indicate access requirements and hazard information - see further information on hazard information posters.
- Supervision of individual students until they are competent to use high risk equipment.
- Restricted access to equipment or areas based on accreditation.
- Records - a statement signed by the student indicating the receipt of the safety information and/or a certificate of competency.
The basic elements of the program will be the same for all workshops and laboratories.
The extent of information, training and supervision required to ensure students are safe will depend on the level of risk presented by plant, equipment or substances in each workshop or laboratory.
