Research Facility
The UTS Graduate School of Health (GSH) is home to one of Australia’s most exciting and comprehensive research facilities. This custom-built wet lab is housed in a brand-new, state-of-the-art building that facilitates world-leading pharmacy, clinical psychology, physiotherapy, orthoptics and good manufacturing practice research.
It enables GSH research activities in the following areas:
- Cancer cell biology
- In vitro translational research
- In vivo pharmacology
- Pharmacogenomics
- Respiratory science
- Formulation science
- Drug discovery and development
- Molecular imaging
- Proteomics
- Histopathology.
UTS’s significant investment in these facilities aligns with the university’s commitment to high-impact research, and acknowledges GSH’s reputation as an international leader in the health care space.
World-class instrumentation
The suite of instruments in the GSH lab is one of the most comprehensive in Australia. It contains the latest health care technologies on the market, many of which are unavailable in other research facilities in NSW.
These include:
- X-20 Flow Cytometry system for world-class cell biology research, from BD Biosciences. This purpose-built system includes a small particle detector for the study of nano and microparticles and is applicable for high throughput screening applications
- Biowizard Bio Atomic Force Microscope (biophysical cell studies and materials science) from JPK Instruments
- NanoString (high throughput molecular diagnostics) from NanoString Technologies
- Cell Analyser (cell metabolism analysis) from Seahorse Bioscience
- Prominence HPLC (quantity analysis of drugs, physiological fluids and amino acids) from Shimadzu
- Spraytec system (new drug delivery systems, devices and formulations) from Malvern Instruments.
World-class laboratory spaces
The GSH research facility includes a diverse array of workspaces that support the development of high impact health care research. These include a formulation science lab and analytical suite that provides a platform for drug discovery and development research; proteomics and molecular biology facilities; and a comprehensive Nikon microscopy collection with live cell and fluorescence imaging and microdissection capabilities.
Collaborative research focus
The GSH facility has been designed to actively facilitate collaborative research that is supported by highly trained technical staff. Staff work extensively with GSH colleagues, external collaborators and the UTS faculties of science and health to deliver multi-disciplinary projects. They continue to establish a range of domestic and international partnerships with other universities and institutes, opening the doors of this purpose-built facility to researchers across the globe.
