Graduate School of Health Research Strategy
Mission / Vision Statement
The Graduate School of Health Research Strategy is aligned with that of the Faculty of Health and UTS 2027 Research. We work within and across disciplines to produce research of the highest quality that improves the health and wellbeing of all members of society. We engage collaboratively and respectfully with our academic and student colleagues, clinical partners, clients and patients, consumer representatives, and industry associates to transform health through high impact, translational research. Our focus on people, technology, and innovation will inform future developments in health policy, practice, and education.
GSH Research Pillars
1. Interprofessional
The complexity of modern healthcare means no single discipline will possess all of the necessary skills or knowledge to make a fundamental difference to health outcomes. GSH research is a truly an interprofessional endeavour, connecting disciplines across UTS in basic and applied research. Our integrated research approach brings a well-rounded perspective to research problems, ensuring timely and powerful translation of findings to real world practice.
2. Translational
GSH researchers are committed to producing high impact research that is informed by, and meets the needs of clients, patients and the broader community. Our School encompasses a wide scope of research, from fundamental laboratory research to randomised controlled trials of new allied health treatments, in-depth qualitative theory-building studies to implementation science research. Irrespective of the type of research being done, the translation of research findings to clinical practice is a key consideration for all of our teams.
3. Connected to Learning and Teaching
Researchers in GSH are committed to fostering strong connections between research and teaching to ensure ongoing improvement and enrichment of learning for our students. We have a focus on both research-inspired teaching, as well teaching-inspired research to ensure that our educational programs are innovative, contemporary, authentic and underpinned by evidence. In a rapidly changing health care environment, our researchers are committed to advancing our professions through discovery and implementation of new knowledge and the training of the future workforce.
4. Innovative
GSH research teams lead in the development and testing of new solutions in the face of increasing challenges to equity and access to healthcare across populations. Our strength lies in creatively addressing problems by collaborating across disciplines, and considering technological and innovative human solutions. Because we work closely with industry partners, as well as clients, patients, consumers and healthcare providers, our research can move quickly to addresses emergent areas of need.
5. Whole of Lifespan
Research at the GSH brings together clinicians and researchers working across the life span, exploring health and ageing in the wider context of lifestyle, society and environment. GSH research encompasses longitudinal, experimental, and qualitative studies that explore health at different life stage transitions. We aim to improve quality life for all people at every stage of life.
6. Inclusive
Fostering a culture of equity, diversity and inclusivity, both amongst researchers and in the research we do, is a key element of the GSH. We practice cultural safety in all areas of our research. Working with stakeholders to co-design research enhances the potential for a positive impact on healthcare nationally and globally. Indigenous health is embedded within the Faculty and contributes to research across the disciplines.
7. Advanced Technologies
GSH researchers are at the forefront of utilising, incorporating, and developing the most advanced technologies within their research agenda. By employing a diverse array of state-of-the-art technologies, we aim to deliver high impact research that is universally accessible and useful. Through our interprofessional approach, our researchers lead the production of high quality original research, not only by harnessing the potential of existing technologies, but also laying the foundation for future innovations.
8. Person-centred
GSH research puts the needs and values of our clients and patients at the heart of our approach. We aim to include consumers and their families in the design and development of our research questions wherever relevant. This helps to ensure that we address the issues that are of most importance to them, in the most respectful and inclusive ways. All of our research is subject to rigorous ethical review to ensure that safety is given the highest priority, and we aim to make our research findings and study results as clear and accessible as possible. Above all, we strive to make our research truly meaningful, to help drive continuous improvements in health outcomes.
