Researchers from UTS and UNSW will receive government funding to conduct a survey of reptiles in Sydney regions as unprecedented bushfires push species closer to extinction.

University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Professor Jonathan Webb and UNSW Professor Mike Letnic will lead a project investigating the impact of bushfires on reptiles in sandstone landscapes of the Sydney region.
The project will be funded by a $244,798 grant from the Wildlife and Habitat Bushfire Recovery Program, part of an overall $12 million investment in the bushfire recovery program, announced by The Hon Sussan Ley MP, Minister for the Environment.
“Our broad aim is to determine whether the wildfires have affected the occupancy of threatened reptiles that are restricted to sandstone habitats in the Sydney region,” said Professor Webb, a wildlife ecologist in the UTS School of Life Sciences.
