Analytical suite
The analytical suite in Chemical Technologies can cater to a range of analytical questions ranging from structural identification and elucidation to the elemental composition of samples.
Agilent 500 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
NMR is a useful tool in the analysis of:
Chemicals (organic and inorganic)
Monomers, polymers, resins
Illicit drugs, pharmaceuticals
Petroleum products
Hazardous waste
Natural products and food
Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
ICP-MS is a useful instrument that can be applied to solid- and solution-based samples.
Applications include:
Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry of solid samples for elemental composition. Samples include biological tissue, teeth, coral and fish otoliths.
ICP-MS can determine the majority of elements except for carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and the noble gases.
Quadrupole time of flight-mass spectrometer (QTOF-MS)
QTOF-MS provides high resolution accurate mass determination (accurate to 4 decimal places). Can be hyphenated to HPLC or CE.
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and related analytical approaches are useful for; determination and quantification, as well as the molecular characterization of hydrocarbons, polymers, gases, and many other sample types.
Major applications include:
Molecular characterization of hydrocarbons
Polymers
Gases
Pesticides
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
HPLC methods can be developed to separate a large variety of compounds.
Typical applications include:
Pharmaceuticals
Pesticides
Separation and characterisation of proteins and peptides
Forensic applications (drugs and explosives)
Capillary Electrophoresis
Capillary Electrophoresis can be used to separate ionic compounds based on the charges and frictional forces.
Applications:
Separation and characterisation of proteins and peptides
DNA fingerprinting
Pharmaceutical Characterisation
Liquid Chromatography coupled with Triple Quadrupole-Mass Spectrometry (LC-QQQ)
Liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry is a useful tool for the analysis of organic compounds/mixtures down to low trace levels.
Major applications include:
- Toxicology
- Forensic applications (explosive/ gunshot residue detection)
- Pharmaceutical applications
- Pesticide analysis
- Proteomics.
Two-dimensional Gas Chromatography coupled with Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer (GCxGC-TOF)
Two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOF) allows the separation of complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds.
It can be used for
- Environmental analysis
- Metabolomics
- Flood/Flavor/Fragrance
- Forensic/Toxicology
- Petrochemical analysis.
