UTS: Health introduces new Primary of Health Care Degree
The Faculty of Health at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has made an explicit commitment to improving cultural competency of both staff and students in an effort to enable improvements in health outcomes for Indigenous Australians. The Faculty has developed and adopted the following statement in regard to making a difference in health care provision and preparation of health professionals.
‘The Faculty of Health considers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health to be everybody’s business, and acknowledges that ongoing colonisation and racism are vital determinants impacting on the health of Indigenous peoples. We are therefore committed to supporting all staff and students to develop new knowledge and skills that will enable meaningful engagement with Indigenous peoples, communities and their organisations’
In addition to the popular UTS Health Nursing, Midwifery and Sport and Exercise undergraduate degrees and as a continued commitment to enabling improvements in Indigenous health outcomes, the Faculty has introduced a Primary Health Care that will be offered as an Away From Base course for an Indigenous only cohort of students.
The course was developed in consultation with Community and by experts in primary health care and Aboriginal health. The Bachelor of Primary Health Care and nested Diploma and Advanced Diploma will be offered in 2015. Those interested studying Primary Health Care can contact UTS Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning on 1800 064 312 or email atsirecruitment@uts.edu.au
