Contrary to popular belief, young people are concerned about COVID-19 – yet they aren't being engaged in discussions about their health.
A recent online survey of over 500 young people found that majority of them had feelings of concern, fear, anxiety and depression as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
And while other countries have given young people a voice, Australian political leaders have instead scolded and criticised them.
Social media is one solution to ensure young people have access to resources on COVID-19. Another is to engage caregivers and trusted professionals to share information and support Australian youth.
However, changes that are equitable and sustainable for all Australians require us to act together. The best way to include young people is to engage meaningfully and respectfully – and speak with, not at, them.
