Narrbang Indigenous Health Research Student Network
Narrbang is an Indigenous health research student network hosted by the Girra Maa Indigenous Health Discipline in the Graduate School of Health at UTS. It is supported by the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Clinical Academic Group of Maridulu Budyari Gumal Sydney Partnerships for Health, Education and Research Enterprise (SPHERE).
Led by Dr Megan Williams Head of Girra Maa Indigenous Health, Narrbang brings together students in Indigenous health research. The three sessions held so far have covered:
- March: An introduction to Narrbang and sharing our research stories
- April: Updates on the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island health research ethics and a discussion about people’s ethics experience
- May: Advice and group sharing on interview transcribing, coding and the use of software such as NVivo to get the most out of data.
Approximately 12-15 people have attended the monthly meetings, from a range of universities with community partnerships. Feedback has included:
"These gatherings are a nice safe place to share our own experiences."
“There’s so much knowledge and skill in the group, we’ve got a lot between us to draw on.”
“That was the most help I had all year about my project!”
The Narrbang group is an opportunity to seek and receive advice from more experienced researchers and peers, to hear about how others have met challenges and navigated complex ethical and methodological issues. As one participant said, “The process of reflecting on our research allows for continual improvement and strategising to make the most of our research opportunities.”
There are six more Narrbang meetings scheduled between June and November 2019 with each month having a different theme. All students in Indigenous health research are welcome to attend. Megan says,
If you are involved in Indigenous health research and looking for a supportive group at a similar point in their research career, come and join us.
