Leader in Indigenous education joins UTS
Associate Professor John Evans has recently joined the UTS Faculty of Health as Professor of Indigenous Health Education, bringing a wealth of industry and academic experience to the role.
Professor Evans holds a PhD from the University of Sydney, as well as a number of other qualifications including a Bachelor and a Masters degree in Sports Science (UNSW), a Masters in Applied Science (QLD) and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies with Merit. He is currently the Program Director of Indigenous Undergraduate Pre-service programs in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney and is highly-regarded as a teacher, researcher, Indigenous leader and mentor of his colleagues.
As a leading Indigenous academic at Sydney University, Professor Evans oversaw the relocation of the University’s Koori Centre (2012), the establishment of the Indigenous Research Collaborative (2013) and the development of a series of university subjects providing students with a pathway into Indigenous studies. Professor Evans has won two teaching awards at the University of Sydney for his work on developing a subject called “Sport and Learning in Australian Culture” and for coordinating the subject “Indigenous Secondary Education”.
Professor Evans is the co-author of the published research book “Advanced Rugby Coaching: An Holistic Approach”, which sold out in Europe in the lead up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. He is also a founding member of the community-based sports program “The Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team”, which promotes education, health and wellbeing as important benefits of participating in sport.
