UTS is stepping up activity in Vietnam, bringing new technologies to critical water systems across the country with a project valued at over AUD$2 million.

Technology transfer to drive innovation

Academics from across the Faculty of Engineering and IT have secured close to AUD$1 million under the first round of Aus4Innovation, a new DFAT scheme that aims to deploy emerging technologies and effective partnership models, and to strengthen innovation – a pillar of the bilateral relationship between Australia and Vietnam.

The one-year project applies Industry 4.0 technologies in different water systems across Vietnam, enabling sustainable communities in those regions.    This is a milestone in the Faculty’s thriving engagement in Vietnam, which has seen UTS emerge as a key driver for research and industry collaboration between the two countries.

The UTS project team possess leading and complementary expertise in data engineering and water technology.  They are working with national universities and local industry in Vietnam, as well as industry partners from Australia, in close collaboration with the Joint Technology and Innovation Research Centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Building on proven technologies, and existing partnerships with Vietnam National University in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the project will demonstrate the function of UTS technology transfer unit Rapido, with a view to establishing a sustainable model for technology transfer in Vietnam.

Activities concentrate on regional water systems, scaling up award-winning arsenic removal technology and promoting sustainable aquaculture along the Vietnamese coastline.   IoT and data analytics platforms will enable accurate monitoring and effective operation of these systems, and support policy development for long-term management.

The Rapido model will make innovative technologies more accessible to small and medium enterprises in Vietnam by unleashing the existing research capabilities of universities and research institutes.  UTS will collaborate with partners to ensure efficient and authentic technology transfer, creating a working model for innovation in Vietnam.

The UTS project team includes Professor Eryk Dutkiewicz, Dr Diep Nguyen, Professor Long Nghiem, Distinguished Professor Saravanamuth Vigneswaran, Dr Vinh Nguyen, Dr Hoang Dinh, Dr Thuy Pham, and Stephanie Himsley.
