Bachelor of Information Technology Co-operative Scholarship – meet Brendon Ward
Brendon Ward
After discovering the possibilities of IT early in high school, Brendon Ward was immersed in software design and coding by year 11. “There’s not really much else that I’ve been interested in,” he says about career paths.
Brendon is now in his final years of the UTS Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Co-operative Scholarship. Aimed at high-achieving students, it is one of Australia’s leading IT programs with a distinct advantage: the three-year, fast-tracked degree includes two internships with leading tech employers. He says it’s the right place to be. “You’re at UTS, the home of technology. Being keen on IT and that industry, the name speaks for itself.”
Brendon’s first-year internship was at leading logistics software developer WiseTech Global, where he worked on their flagship product, CargoWise One. It is used by over half of the world’s top 50 third-party logistics providers.
It was a great experience. I got to rotate through three teams, learned a lot doing day-to-day tasks and picked up coding skills. It wasn’t just applying skills from uni.
The lead-up to the internship was equally memorable. To ensure a relevant and productive experience, students visited over 30 of the sponsor companies to engage with professionals. “It’s good to meet people and get an insight into what you’ll be doing,” says Brendon. “From there you get to place your preferences for the internship.”
