International initiatives in architecture and design draw leading academic to UTS
Leading architectural historian, theorist and critic, Charles Rice has been appointed Professor of Architecture in the Faculty of Design Architecture and Building at the University of Technology, Sydney.
Professor Rice returns to UTS after four years at London’s Kingston University as Professor of Architectural History and Theory and Head of the School of Art and Design History.
“It’s a particularly exciting time for UTS,” Professor Rice said.
“Having watched its development from a distance, I can see how it has become increasingly engaged internationally through teaching, learning and research. That’s the future for universities, and I’m looking forward to bringing my own international experience to bear on that.”
Professor Rice will work across the architecture and design disciplines, reflecting DAB’s collaborative outlook.
“My own research considers questions of the interior across art, architecture and design. The development of courses and research initiatives across those disciplines in DAB is a significant draw for me in terms of the development of my own work,” he said.
Head of the School of Architecture, Professor Anthony Burke said Professor Rice would bring strategic perspective to the faculty’s international research programs.
"Professor Rice's international reputation for scholarship and academic leadership is exemplary. His interdisciplinary focus will strengthen the faculty’s research outcomes,” Professor Burke said.

During Professor Rice’s appointment at Kingston University, he led major curriculum renewal in the School of Art and Design History, developed an enduring partnership with London’s renowned Institute of Contemporary Arts, and was a member of the steering committee for the University’s Research Evaluation Framework (REF) submission.
He remains co-editor of The Journal of Architecture, published by Routledge for the Royal Institute of British Architects, and widely acknowledged as one of the leading peer-reviewed journals in the field.
During his time at UTS between 2005-2010, Charles was director of the Centre for Contemporary Design Practices, and served a two-year term as Deputy Chair of UTS’s Academic Board.
