For 30 years the UTS Faculty of Design Architecture and Building has exemplified the best professional education across the design and built environment disciplines. With a staff of award-winning practitioners, respected educators and leading researchers, we seek to promote the public good through research and purposeful learning across our disciplines.
Dean's message
The Faculty has a strong reputation for engagement with industry and relevance in critical practice. Our disciplines span the built environment and all forms of physical and visual design with our students, academic leaders and practitioners exploring and solving critical questions of our time: What will it take to create more just and socially inclusive cities? Address climate resilience? Reduce planetary waste? Achieve better health outcomes for everyone? Our unique cross-disciplinary approach to learning and research allows us to address these issues by combining design with expertise in ecology, technology, planning, management, construction and finance.
As part of a university of technology, we focus on the relationship between culture and technology and the ways in which this relationship can be mediated by design. We are focused on exploring the future of practice in design, manufacturing and construction, as well as understanding how technology will shape our environments and our cities. To support both teaching and research, we continue to invest in new technologies for digital and material making, robotics and advanced fabrication, across our disciplines. Specialist labs support a vibrant culture of experimentation.
We continue to support a powerful design culture through a commitment to studio learning, public critique and research through design and creative practice. Research and teaching are integrated across the faculty, so that students are engaged with both academic leaders and industry practitioners. Our continued growth in community engagement, cultural exchange, pipeline programs and impactful research, support our commitment to social justice and more equitable cities.
Looking to the future, we are expanding our external partnerships, through greater collaboration with industry, government and other institutions. Through these partnerships we combine our expertise and knowledge with that of other experts to achieve real-world research that aims to answer some of the big questions of our time.
We welcome you to join us in this exciting work.
