UTS alum, writer, producer and director Caroline Beecham was the guest for the July edition of the UTS Writers' Salon, a periodical event which sees authors visit (or in many cases, return) to UTS to read from and discuss their latest works.

Caroline read from and discussed her latest novel 'Esther's Children', a book inspired by the remarkable life of Esther Simpson.

Esther worked for the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning, a British organisation that in the 1930s and 1940s helped to rescue thousands of academics and scholars of Jewish ancestry from the Nazis, by helping them find employment in Britain and other safe countries. Sixteen went on to become Nobel Prize winners.

Caroline was interviewed by fellow UTS Master of Arts in Creative Writing alum Nathan McMahon, where they discussed the process of writing (Nathan is currently editing a novel written entirely on his phone), and how creative writing can use facts to craft compelling narratives. They also touched on the importance of research and the difficulties of mixing fact into fiction.
'Esther's Children' was published by Allen & Unwin and is available now.
