UTS FASS on display at Vivid 2024
Vivid 2024 is just around the corner. With a stacked line-up of art and events, Sydney’s annual celebration of creativity, innovation and technology is returning for its 14th year to transform the city for 23 nights.
UTS is proud to once again be operating as Location Partner, welcoming you to campus to connect, create and participate.
There’s a huge list of events happening in and around our campus, including these special events involving FASS staff.
Spirits of the Hoey
Hear the tales and relive the glory days of Sydney’s iconic Hopetoun Hotel, a legendary music venue where artists like Paul Kelly, Hoodoo Gurus and Gotye cut their teeth. If the beer splashed walls could speak, they’d have quite the story to tell.
UTS academics Dr Liz Giuffre and Dr Gregory Ferris have resurrected the hotel through an interactive documentary, which features 80 original interviews with musicians, staff and punters.
In this session, Liz and Greg will be speaking with Hoey-regulars and acclaimed Aussie musos Sarah Blasko, Clyde Bramley, Sally Seltmann and photographer Tony Mott.
The Hoey suddenly closed in 2009, so this event and documentary offers the chance to re-open its doors and pay homage to the rich legacy of the Sydney music scene of the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s.
The public research work has been partly funded by the City of Sydney and the Powerhouse Museum Research Fellowship Program.
This event is now sold out. But you can read more about the whole Spirits of the Hoey project here.
Superheroes of Science
This event brings together award-winning animators and filmmakers from FASS with ground-breaking research scientists from the Faculty of Science, working together as part of the Wonder Project, a collaborative project creating transformative science stories that inspire young people, especially young women, to explore careers in STEM.
Designed for kids between 8-12, this workshop plunges kids into the weird and wonderful world of microscopic science.
Fully interactive, kids are invited to gaze through microscopes and discover the tiny world that exists beyond normal vision, created through a blend of animation and science. The kids will have a chance to design their own small (but mighty) superhero and see what it’s like to be a scientist.
FASS academics attending include Professor Rachel Landers, Matt Gidney, Amelia Farrell, Alyssa Mullen, Aki Clayton and Atticus Gough. This event is also sold out.
