Podcast 'Technology and' gets into jazz, heritage and more

James Donald is Emeritus Professor of Film at UNSW Australia and Visiting Professor at the University of Liverpool. He is author of Some of These Days: Black Stars, Jazz Aesthetics, and Modernist Culture (2015), Imagining the Modern City (1999), and Sentimental Education (1992), and editor of thirteen volumes, including Fantasy and the Cinema (1989), Close Up: Cinema and Modernism (2000) and The SAGE Handbook of Film Studies (2008). He was editor of Screen Education in the late 1970s and founding editor of New Formations. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Andrew Hurley is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Technology, Sydney and Head of School of International Studies and Education. Andrew is a cultural historian with a special interest in music and the acoustic. In this context he has written widely on interculturalities and intermediality. He is the author of The Return of Jazz: Joachim-Ernst Berendt and West German Cultural Change (2009, 2011), and Into The Groove: Popular Music and Contemporary German Fiction ( 2015), and Ludwig Leichhardt Ghost: The Strange Career of a Traveling Myth ( 2018).

Bruce Johnson is Adjunct Professor in the School of Communication, University of Technology Sydney, Visiting Professor and Docent in the Department of Cultural History at the University of Turku, Finland, and also Visiting Professor in the Department of Music at University of Glasgow. He is a world leading scholar in Jazz and Popular Music Studies, and author of foundational texts The Oxford Companion to Australian Jazz (1987), The Inaudible Music. Jazz, gender and Australian modernity (2000), and most recently Popular Music and Australian Culture: Across the Grain (2022). 

Dr Elizabeth Humphrys is a political economist and head of the Social and Political Sciences discipline in FASS at UTS. Her research examines work and workers in the context of economic crisis and change, with a focus on occupational health and safety and control over the labour process. Elizabeth is a member of the UTS Climate, Society and Environment Research Centre (C-SERC) and the UTS Australian Centre for Public History (ACPH), and a collaborating Associate at The Australia Institute's Centre for Future Work.

Daryna Zhyvohliadova is a Ukrainian cultural professional, combining her PhD research on designing the future of international cultural relations with practical experience. She was previously responsible for international cultural cooperation at Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and Creative Europe Desk Ukraine as well as involved in UNFPA Humanitarian Response on Youth. Now she is also consulting the ALIPH Foundation for Protecting UK.

Dr Timothy Laurie is a Senior Lecturer and Higher Degree Research Coordinator in the School of Communication. His core research interests include cultural theory, gender and sexuality studies, studies in popular culture, and philosophy. He is currently a Chief Investigator on Australian Boys: Beyond the Boy Problem, funded through an Australian Research Council Special Interest Grant (2021-2024). Timothy has co-authored The Theory of Love: Ideals, Limits, Futures (Palgrave, 2021) with Hannah Stark, and co-edited Unsettled Voices: Beyond Free Speech in the Late Liberal Era (Routledge, 2021) with Tanja Dreher and Michael Griffiths. Timothy is also a Managing Editor for Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies and the regional representative for Australia and New Zealand on the Board of the Association for Cultural Studies 

Dr Amelia Johns is a Senior Lecturer, Digital and Social Media, and specialises in youth digital media activism and digital citizenship.  Her current projects are an ARC Discovery project ‘Fostering Global Digital Citizenship: Diaspora Youth in a Connected World’ (with Johns, Walton, Caluya & Harris) and she is also lead researcher on a project funded by Facebook’s Content Policy Award ‘Mapping and countering the diffusion of hate speech across social media’ (with Bailo and Marian-Andrei). She has published in Social Media + Society, Media International Australia, Journal of Sociology, and is co-editor of an upcoming special issue of 'First Monday '10 Years of WhatsApp: The role of chat apps in the formation and mobilisation of online publics’. She is author of Battle for the Flag and co-editor of Negotiating Digital Citizenship: Control, Contest Culture (with McCosker and Vivienne).
