Inner Sydney High students visit FASS
The UTS School of International Studies and Education were glad to welcome Year 11 students from Inner Sydney High School (ISHS) for our inaugural Year 11 Inspire Day. This special event offered ISHS students a firsthand glimpse into life at UTS, allowing them to immerse themselves in a university environment for a day.
The day began with students gathering at UTS Central in Theatre CB02.05.150, where they were greeted by ISHS Deputy Principal Chris Kazanis, who delivered a welcome presentation. Students found their way to their designated classrooms, where they participated in an opening presentation by external presenters, Elevate, focusing on future planning, motivation mapping, confidence building, and goal setting.
At midday, ISHS students enjoyed a campus tour conducted by UTS Outreach, where UTS student volunteers provided insights into our history and campus. Later, Associate Professor Andrew Hurley, Head of the School of International Studies and Education, spoke with the students about the kind of study experience offered here.
Kate Kelly, who is in the third year of her combined Bachelor of Communication (Writing and Publishing) Master of Teaching in Secondary Education degree, spoke to the students about striking a balance between academics and socialising while at uni.
The program concluded with Luke Sharp, Japanese Language Lecturer and First and Further Year Experience Coordinator (FFYE), presenting the opportunities for international studies and the possibility of learning a new language alongside one’s primary studies abroad. He highlighted the diverse student societies at UTS, showcasing the vibrant student community.
Towards the end of the day, students had the opportunity to choose elective classes tailored to their interests, ranging from academic writing and achieving higher bands to career pathways and memory techniques, aiming to equip them for their journey from school to university.
We hope for a continued collaboration with Inner Sydney High School, and plan to host similar events in the years to come.
