Floodplain Risk Management and Climate Change – Capacity Building in Viet Nam
In May 2017 the Faculty of Engineering and IT welcomed a delegation of 15 Fellows from Vietnam to undertake a program in floodplain risk management and climate change.

The Fellows were funded under the DFAT Australia Awards Fellowships program. The Fellowship showcased UTS’ Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater (CTWW), which has partnered with local industry and councils to deliver the program that involved practical and theoretical training through a lecture series, industry site visits, and council work placements. The Fellowship contributes to the development and establishment of solid flood mitigation planning and risk management processes in Vietnam, while facilitating the establishment of valuable relationships with Australian industry counterparts.
In June, follow-up workshops were conducted in Vietnam to develop a comprehensive Flood Risk Management Framework, in collaboration with the private, public and academic sectors and in consideration of community and environmental responses. The Faculty of Engineering and IT representatives also met with counterparts at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Thuy Loi University, Institute of Mechanics (IMECH) and Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) to discuss relevant issues affecting Vietnam flood management, capacity building, and potential areas of future collaboration.
