The Smart Urban Transportation Hubs (SUTH) studio explored an evidence based design approach towards understanding the role of mega infrastructural enablers and their impact on the urban precinct within which they operate. The studio examined the case of the Central Station Precinct, investigating a variety of issues ranging from crime and safety, infrastructural overload, connecting and serving as a melting pot of economic and social activities for surrounding suburbs, as well as serving as an iconic gateway to the majestic city of Sydney. Students engaged with open data and computational tools and techniques to tackle the complexity of understanding and reimagining a precinct through a mix of quantitative and qualitative analysis. 

Re-imagining the Central station precinct is part of NSW Government’s priority to transform Sydney, improve public transport as well as build a 21st century image of Sydney as a progressive and forward-thinking city. This student work acts as a response to Government effort by actively engaging stakeholders from governmental bodies such as Transport for NSW in the design process.
