In our research, we are committed to the pursuit of excellence. Our faculty members achieve this objective by publishing in best academic journals attracting external funding, contributing to public debates and engaging with the private sector and government. Furthermore, our teaching programs (undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD in Economics) are strongly informed by our research strengths.

We organise two weekly seminars where internationally recognised scholars present their research. Our academics also participate in reading groups and brown bag seminars organised along with other Sydney-based Universities and we regularly organise national and international events. Finally, the Economics Department hosts the Centre for Policy and Market Design (CPMD) Research Centre and has strong ties with the UTS Behavioural Lab.

Research strengths

Our major research strengths include Microeconomic Theory, Behavioural and Experimental Economics, Time Series Econometrics, Bayesian Econometrics, Agent-based and Nonlinear Dynamic Models, and Microeconometrics applied to Health, Labour and other areas of Public Policy.

Our research has been funded by the Australian Research Council, the National Health and Medical Research Council, the US National Science Foundation, and the Economic & Social Research Council (UK).

PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows advised by academics of the Department of Economics occupy positions of leadership in major academic and research centres worldwide, for example, NYU Abu Dhabi, University of Bonn, Nanjing Audit University, NSW Department of Labour, University of Queensland and University of Melbourne.
